Every now and then, you will see gigantic blades for a wind turbine being hauled along major roads in Northern Colorado. I find that items of this size can be moved by semi-trucks all over the United States.

Huge Generator Transport Planned for Saturday, March 14, 2026

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation's Facebook page, Xcel Energy will be moving the first of four large generators from Loveland to Platteville. 20 vehicles will be in this caravan, moving this gigantic generator from point A to B on Saturday, March 14, 2026.

Expect Major Traffic Delays Along the Route

The Colorado Department of Transportation says to expect delays on U.S. Highway 287, Colorado Highway 66, and on Interstate 25, as this slow-moving transport moves a one-million-pound generator at a top speed of about five miles per hour. As you can imagine, this will cause delays. There will be road closures along these routes. Those closures include the following:

  • US Highway 287 from Loveland to Longmont, from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • Colorado Highway 66 from Longmont to Interstate 25 from 10:45 a.m to noon.
  • Interstate 25 (northbound and southbound), south of Colorado Highway 66 from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Colorado Highway 66 east of Interstate 25 to Platteville from 12:45 p.m. to 2 p.m.

At the speed of five miles per hour, this is going to take quite a while. Think of a brisk walk. That is about the speed at which this caravan equipped with the generator will be moving, from Loveland to Platteville.

Alternate Route for Colorado Drivers

The Colorado Department of Transportation says that there will be delays, and to plan ahead. U.S. Highway 85 will remain open throughout the morning as a viable alternative route for travelers. Get more info below:
