Just the other day, I was at Target looking at school supplies and was shocked to see that the average price of a backpack is currently over $65. And that's just for a basic Jansport brand.

Buying school supplies for one kid can easily reach upwards of $100, which is insane. I can't imagine how families with multiple kids swing it.

So, if you do need assistance with your school supply list, here are some options.

Free school supplies and backpacks

  • Realities For Children in Fort Collins hosts an annual backpack and school supply drive. Partner agencies all over Fort Collins work together.
  • Thompson Education Foundation in Loveland is a great resource for the community. If you have a child in the Thompson school district, you can request school supplies through the school at the start of the new year.
  • Kenzie's Causes runs an annual "Packz 4 Kidz" at events across Colorado
  • A Precious Child has a "Fill A Backpack" program where they stuff backpacks and distribute them at community events.

Our go-to shopping location is Walmart because you're going to get so major deals. Last year I stocked up on paper, markers, and folders all just one dollar each.

If you're a Target Circle Member, you can save a little scratch with back-to-school deals.

Staples is known for their penny deals in both July and August.

One of my favorite stores ever has to be Dollar Tree because I feel like a rich person. I can shop with reckless abandon. Dollar Tree has practically everything you need for the first day of school.
