Warmer weather means open burn season in Grand Junction, which is mainly used in agricultural burning and requires a lot of damage control. Here are some tips to make sure you're burning safely.

The Grand Junction Police Department and Grand Junction Fire Department are offering some tips and suggestions to help you ensure that you're burning as safely and controlled as possible. Before you get started, you'll need to make sure you have your open burn permit, you can get one at the Grand Junction Fire Department office or for more information, visit the GJ City website.

While burning, you'll need to make sure you have plenty of water handy to control the spread of the fire. Grand Junction resident Tami Richardson told Channel 11 News she had hundreds of gallons of water prepared earlier this week, and she still had to call the GJFD to help control her open burn.

Changes in wind and changes in weather are also huge factors for the area. Grand Junction Fire Department Public Information Officer, Sean Montgomery suggests checking the weather because it can change without notice.

If you're planning on taking advantage of open burn season -- now until May 31 -- make sure you are prepared ahead of time.
