‘Pirates of the Caribbean’s Gore Verbinski Might Direct ‘Gambit’
It seems like every month or so there’s more breaking news about that Gambit movie, but it has all gone nowhere since the film was first announced all those years ago. Like old Rose in Titanic, we wait and we wait and we wait, to seemingly no avail — but there might be some hope on the horizon. Gore Verbinski, whom you might recognize from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Rango, or maybe this year’s A Cure for Wellness, has been approached by Fox.
The Hollywood Reporter announced yesterday that Verbinski was in talks to helm Gambit, which has already seen Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) sign on and then sign off again in the past couple of years. Channing Tatum is still planning to star as the Cajun mutant whose powers of kinetic energy manipulation make him the perfect crime-fighting magician, and said merely two months ago that he and the studio were giving the plot of the movie “a rethink,” after Deadpool and Logan blazed the trail for edgier, bloodier superhero movies.
The best thing about Verbinski as a director is that he seems like he’s game for pretty much whatever. I’ve always been charmed by the utter weirdness of his movies; the third Pirates movie featured a lady who becomes a giant and then dissolves into thousands of crabs that fall into the ocean and become a whirlpool. I have no idea what tone or story they’re going for with the Gambit movie, but Verbinski might just be the perfect man for the job.
