Frank Ocean Covers Sade’s ‘By Your Side’ at Lollapalooza
Frank Ocean opened his intimate set at Lollapalooza in Chicago on Saturday night with a beautiful cover of Sade’s classic love song ‘By Your Side.’
The R&B crooner has been playing ‘By Your Side’ on his Channel Orange Tour and chose to begin his highly-anticipated set with the emotional song, as captured in this fan video. The performance was striking in its simplicity. Ocean sat on a stool and was accompanied only by acoustic guitars — and the voices of fans singing along.
The ballad set the tone for Ocean’s hour-long Lollapalooza performance, which included several tracks from his mixtape ‘Nostalgia, Ultra,’ plus ‘Thinkin Bout You,’ ‘Pyramids’ and other tracks from ‘Channel Orange.’ He earned loud cheers when he introduced ‘Bad Religion,’ and said that talking about his first love (who was another man) has”taken the fear away.”
‘By Your Side’ first appeared on Sade’s Grammy-winning 2000 album ‘Lovers Rock.’ Check out her original recording below.
