A former Fossil Ridge SaberCat will now be a Portland Thorn.

The Oregon-based professional soccer team chose 19-year-old Sophia Smith to be their first pick in the 2020 National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) draft, according to The Coloradoan

The two-time champion team was allowed to pick first, making Smith the No. 1 pick in the NWSL.

Following her time at Fossil Ridge High School, Smith went on to play soccer at Stanford.

She helped the university win a national title in December by recording two hat tricks, seven goals, and four assists. Her efforts led her to be named the MVP of the 2019 NCAA tournament.

Smith will be giving up her last two seasons at Stanford in order to go pro. The teen announced the news on Twitter, stating that it was a difficult but exciting decision.

The decision makes her the first teenager ever to be selected by the NWSL.

The Windsor native also has her eye on the U.S. national team, as she has been training with them since her tournament success in December.

Smith is also hoping to compete in the 2020 Olympics.

Whether she ends up on the Olympic team or not, Smith certainly gives Fort Collins something to cheer for.
