Five Community Education Classes You Should Take for Fall 2020

This is the class that caught my eye. The instructor is an old classmate of mine from high school. He published a book on astronomy a few years ago and gave me an autographed copy. I didn't understand one word of it, but I do have the book.

According to the syllabus, Stargazing 101 "This class teaches you everything you need to know to get started in the hobby of astronomy and start enjoying the clear, steady night skies of western Colorado."

Okay, I'm taking this one. Just last Saturday I mentioned to a friend how great it would be to have a better understanding of wine. As it stands, my knowledge is this: Red wine gives me a headache. Consequently, I drink white wines and Zinfandels, and for the most part, the cheaper the better.

With that in mind, it's probably best I take this course. According to the syllabus, " In this class, students will learn about primary, secondary, and tertiary aromatics, and will have the opportunity to calibrate their nose through the use of aroma vial standards. This seminar includes the evaluation of several wines. Must be at least 21 years of age."

Everyone can use a deeper understanding of music theory. Trust me, theory can be very intimidating. Many experienced musicians lack an understanding of the principles of music theory.

This course "takes students through the basics of reading and notating music through composing and harmonizing a melody. You do not need to play an instrument to benefit from this course."

Did you know District 51 high schools are now offering Sign Language as a foreign language? I just learned this the other day.

Western Colorado Community College offers this introductory course for the Fall semester. According to the syllabus, "This course offers a beginning study of American Sign Language, emphasizing foundational knowledge of Deaf community, culture, and history, as well as basic vocabulary, beginner grammatical structure, and basic comprehension and conversational skills. This will be a fun and interactive class where you are exposed to a world of visual language."

My dad enjoyed taking classes such as this, well into his retirement years. The desire to learn never ends, and even well into his 70's, my dad became very proficient with computers.

According to the WCCC syllabus, this course offers "a hands-on and detailed introduction to the basic tools, tricks, and aspects of Adobe Illustrator, a powerful and unique graphics program used for vector-based design. Learn how to apply a basic understanding of Illustrator to projects like logo design, illustrations, print pieces, graphic design, and more."
