Colorado voters will get the chance to decide the fate of the state's electoral college votes.

A ballot measure will appear on the 2020 November ballot which will allow the state's voters to determine whether or not Colorado joins the National Popular Vote compact. If enough states join the compact, the electoral college system will essentially end and presidential elections will be determined strictly by the nation's popular vote. So far, the states joining the compact represent 196 of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency.

Supporters of the measure say a national populate vote will ensure every vote counts. Opponents argue eliminating the electoral college would allow the liberal major population centers to have a dominant voice in dictating future political outcomes.

In the history of the United States, only five times has a president been elected despite losing the popular vote. That means 53 out of 58 elections, the winning candidate won the popular vote. That's 91% of the time. It seems like the system has worked pretty well for a long time, but it may be about to change.
