Colorado train riders should be delighted.

The Durango Silverton Railroad has announced it is opening for the summer on June 23. That is the good news, but it is not business as usual.

The popular destination is offering modified services, limited capacity, and will be implementing new safety procedures

One of the biggest differences you'll find is that the train will not run to Silverton through August 15 due to restrictions. The train will be providing a Tuesday through Saturday roundtrip from the Rockwood Depot to Cascade Canyon.

With the summer tourist season just getting underway, it will be interesting to see how other state tourist attractions operate under COVID-19 restrictions. It will also be interesting to see how large the influx of out-of-state visitors will be this summer. The Colorado tourism website is not discouraging visitors from coming but is encouraging responsible behavior.

We in Colorado are on a steady, thoughtful path to reopening our tourism economy. Guidance for travelers may vary depending on what part of the state you are visiting. As Colorado continues to take positive steps toward reactivating our economy, the health and safety of both visitors and residents remain our highest priority. As you visit Colorado, we encourage you to embrace our new interpretation of responsible tourism — showing care not only for our destinations but for our visitors and the people who call Colorado home.

I would echo the sentiments as well that visitors respect the guidelines that are in place in Colorado as we work through the coronavirus pandemic and work toward getting our state completely opened.
