The Million Dollar Highway is a 25-mile long road from Colorado to New Mexico also known as Highway 550 and is one gorgeous stretch of road.

The best part of this trip is you don't even have to leave your car if you don't want to.

But you're going to want to. There is so much to see along this stretch of road you probably won't be able to help yourself.

For example, you can stop in Silverton and do some shopping, get a bite to eat then head off to inspect a ghost town in Animas Forks or go to Durango and relax in the hot springs.

If that doesn't excite you, try the summit of Red Mountain Pass. The views alone will have you pulling over and taking pics all over the place. For sheer beauty, make sure you check out the views of the Uncompahgre Gorge.

Oh and make sure you stop in Ouray because, in addition to even more hot springs, you can get your waterfall fix when you check out the Box Canyon Waterfall.

Or if you'd rather, just cruise the highway and check out the scenery along the most beautiful stretch of highway anywhere.

As for why it's called the Million Dollar Highway, well, I choose to go with the million dollar views.
