Construction is finally underway on the new Cameo Shooting and Education Complex east of Grand Junction.

Workers have begun moving dirt at the site of the 2,000-acre complex, which ultimately is expected to draw some 50,000 visitors annually.

At last year's opening ceremony, Colorado Parks and Wildlife Area Wildlife Manager JT Romatzke said the complex will be "one of the finest shooting sports facilities in the nation."

The facilities will include indoor classrooms for education, multiple ranges for rifle, shotgun, pistol, and archery, plus indoor ranges and a pro shop.

The Cameo complex is expected to host "high-end" shooting competitions, attracting thousands of visitors from all over the world to the area. Locally, gun enthusiasts can practice shooting, law enforcement can train, and young people will receive an outdoor-related education.

Romatzke says the completed range is years away, but in the meantime, shooters will have a place to site in their rifles and shoot their pistols.

In a Colorado Parks and Wildlife survey, 95% of respondents expressed support in having the shooting complex in the Grand Valley. It's likely to be a very popular local hangout as the popularity of shooting sports continues to explode.
