Colorado Officer Off-Duty Killed in Car Crash
It's devastating news when anyone is tragically taken from this world leaving their family to pick up the pieces and unfortunately this past weekend took the life of one Colorado law enforcement officer. We are hearing from ABC 7 Denver, that the chief of police for the Aurora Police Department has identified one of her officers as the person killed in a car crash over this past weekend.
The officer 25-year-old Mikaela M. Lakin was off-duty at the time and was struck and killed at S. Aurora Parkway and E. Arapahoe Road according to her chief of police Vanessa Wilson. At the time of the crash, the officer was riding a motorcycle eastbound when a driver in a Honda Pilot made a left turn from the westbound lanes and failed to yield to Lakin. The officer had the right of way at the time of the crash but the injuries were too much and she died at the scene.
The driver of the Honda Pilot has been cooperating with police investigating the crash and was taken treated for minor injuries after the crash took place. At this time police do not believe that drugs, alcohol, or speed were a factor in this crash.
Lakin had been with the Aurora Police Department since August of 2019.
The investigation is still underway so if you have any more details or possibly dash camera footage you're being encouraged to contact the Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867 or contact the Aurora Police Department Traffic Unit.
Thank you to all officers that protect and serve Colorado each day. Please stay safe.
