Several mountain passes are closed following the recent snowfall.

As the snow continues to pile up so does the avalanche risk. Colorado Department Of Transportation has closed sections of highways in order to conduct avalanche control. Once the snow is brought down, CDOT crews will then clear the snow and debris from the highway. The process can take anywhere from a few hours to several days to complete. Of course, CDOT will reopen the highway as soon as it is safe.

The following mountain passes have been closed for avalanche mitigation. Those include Wolf Creek Pass, Molas Pass, Red Mountain, and Coal Bank Pass. The projects are planned to be completed in a day or two.

Avalanche monitoring and managing is a big job. CDOT keeps an eye on anywhere from 278 to 522 known avalanche paths in Colorado. For the latest winter travel information just click HERE.
