Shocking Confession: Colorado Dad Accused of Attempted Murder of 5-Year-Old Son

A Colorado man is accused of intentionally trying to drown his child in a fenced-off drainage culvert.

According to a report from the New York Post, Michael Ninomiya, 42, allegedly attempted to drown and beat his 5-year-old son in icy water along the Cherry Creek Trail in Denver on January 12.

Allegedly Ninomiya has a history of mental health problems and during his 20's was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

However, the mother of the young boy told authorities that she never thought Ninomiya would hurt their child.

Ninomiya told her that he and their son were going on an "adventure" and once it started getting dark, she became worried for their safety.

No Accident Along Cherry Creek Trail | Denver, Colorado

When Ninomiya called emergency responders he acted as though the incident was an accident, but operators were suspicious when he wouldn't provide an exact location of their whereabouts.

Local authorities interviewed Ninomiya and that's when he confessed that he intentionally tried to kill his young son and then hurt himself to make it appear like it was an accident.

Colorado law enforcement is asking the public if they may have witnessed the incident in an effort to gain more information for their investigation.

5-Year-Old In Critical Condition

At this time things are looking dire for the young boy. The child is said to be hospitalized and in critical condition. The 5-year-old is suffering from fluctuating pressure in his brain.

Criminal Charges Follow

Ninomiya has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder of a victim under 12, and attempted child abuse that would knowingly or recklessly cause death. Ninomiya's bond has been set at $1 million.
