Avalanches Are A Big Deal in Colorado

Those living or visiting Colorado should always be aware of the potential dangers when skiing, biking, or even just hiking.

In fact, the Colorado Avalance Information Center reports that "since 1950 avalanches have killed more people in Colorado than any other natural hazard."

In the U.S. alone, Colorado avalanches account for one-third of avalanche deaths.

Who is the Summit County Rescue Group?

The Summit County Rescue Group is a non-profit mountain search and rescue organization that is staffed entirely by volunteers. These exact same volunteers respond to mountain search and rescue missions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Money for mission expenses come directly from individual donations, grants, and fundraising.

Mountain rescue teams and ski patrol teams utilize K9s for their amazing sense of smell, which helps volunteers perform rescues quickly.

January Safety Awareness in Colorado

This past weekend the Summit County Rescue Group participated in the Copper Safetyfest, which celebrates and raises awareness for safe skiing and riding.

The Safetyfest included live avalanche dog demonstrations, a flight for life helicopter landing at patrol headquarters, and even toboggan races.

Living in Colorado means taking advantage of the environment around you, but also remaining safe while still alert to potential dangers.

Remember if you are planning any activities in the mountains and backcountry to travel with a partner, let others know your travel plans, and check avalanche conditions.
