What Would You Do? Colorado Parents Report Son to Police For Attempted Kidnapping
Colorado police received a very helpful tip from an unlikely source when looking for the person responsible for an attempted kidnapping.
According to a report from People, Diego James Gettler, 28, was arrested on September 26 in Parker, Colorado for attempted second-degree kidnapping.
Site of Attempted Kidnapping Was at A School
On September 23, at approximately 7:30 AM, Thornton Police were dispatched to STEM Launch middle school where a 10-year-old girl reported that a man had attempted to abduct her.
The girl had been dropped off at school by her mother just a bit earlier and was sitting on some steps near the school when a man approached her. The man is reported to have asked the young girl if she went to school there and proceeded to walk past her up the stairs.
The 10-year-old felt uncomfortable and decided to stand up to move away when suddenly the man allegedly grabbed her waist from behind.
Young Colorado Girl Fights Off Kidnapper
The girl struggled with the man to escape his grasp and began to scream for help. The man covered the girl's mouth but was caught off guard when the young student pulled down the mask that was concealing his face.
Authorities believe this move frightened her attacker and caused him to flee the scene on foot.
Information Released to Public about Thornton Attempted Kidnapping
A flyer with multiple images and a description of the man was released to the public in an attempt to identify the man.
A $2,000 reward was offered as an incentive for information leading to the arrest of the suspect which described the individual as a thin male who was estimated to be 5'8.
Authorities used surveillance footage to link the man to a gray ‘06-‘09 Saturn Aura, with damage to the driver's side fender and door that would likely prevent the door from opening.
Colorado Parents Come Forward with Vital Information
An affidavit obtained by People states that Gettler's parents recognized their son from the surveillance images released and realized that his vehicle also matched the description that police gave.
On September 26, Gettler's parents went to the Thornton Police Department and identified their son as the potential kidnapper.
There is no word on whether Gettler's parents received the $2,000 tip money.
