As we prepare to enter Phase 2 of the COVID-19 Reopen Plan, Grand Junction area health clubs are gearing up for the changes. What will be different when Phase 2 rolls around on June 1?

If you've been to an area health club since they reopened to the public, you've no doubt noticed changes. Group fitness classes are not available, pools and hot tubs are closed, and far fewer people are visiting the facilities. With Phase 2 less than a week away, clubs are posting the changes their members can expect.

Two area gyms, Mesa Fitness on Rimrock Drive in Grand Junction, and Mesa Fitness in Clifton have shared detailed info as to the upcoming changes. Examples would include:

  • Longer business hours
  • Capacity will increase to 50%, not to exceed 175 persons at a time
  • Childcare facilities will reopen, but with limited capacity
  • Group exercise classes will reopen with limited capacity
  • Basketball and racquetball courts will reopen
  • The pool will reopen at 50% capacity
  • Hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms will reopen
  • Locker rooms and showers will be available

Things that will not change at Mesa Fitness during Phase 2 include:

  • The juice bar will remain closed
  • Basketball and racquetball equipment will not be provided by the gym
  • No pick-up basketball games allowed
  • Members are strongly encouraged to wear masks while using the club facilities

The examples listed above reflect the changes at Mesa Fitness locations. What about other Grand Junction area gyms? Crossroads Fitness released the following information regarding their two Grand Junction locations:

  • Longer business hours
  • Capacity will increase to 50%
  • Locker rooms and showers will be available
  • Limited Group X classes and Mind-Body classes available at the North club
  • Pool and Hot Tub at North club open with limited capacity

Things that won't change during Phase 2 include:

  • Members are encouraged to wear masks
  • Childcare facility will remain closed
  • Steam room and sauna will remain closed
  • Complimentary coffee at the downtown location will not be offered
  • No towel service

I spoke with the owners at Monument Fitness on Broadway in the Redlands. They report the gym will operate in much the same manner as during the previous phase.

It appears area health clubs are inching their way back to normal. Even with abbreviated hours of operation, there's still ample time for most people to use the gym. Services remaining unavailable are minimal.

If you've not visited a Grand Junction area gym since they reopened, you're missing out. For the most part, unless you thrive on the "group fitness" classes, a visit to the gym isn't that different than before the COVID-19 closures. Personally, I find it easier to maintain social distance at the gym than at the grocery store.
