If you're heading up the Grand Mesa anytime soon, be prepared to encounter road maintenance. The Colorado Department of Transportation has begun a project involving a 25-mile stretch of CO 65.

The repair and improvement project runs from mile marker 36 to 61.4 on CO 65. As you pass by this area, you'll notice new asphalt overlay, chip seal, and even a new guardrail or two.

According to a statement from CDOT, repairs and maintenance will continue through mid-September 2017.

Repairs and improvements have been separated into three methods:

  • Asphalt overlay from I-70 to the town of Mesa.
  • Chip seal from mile markers 36 to 48
  • Milling and overlay in the town of Mesa, upgrading curb ramps in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

How will this impact motorists heading up and down the Mesa? Crews will be working from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. No weekend of nighttime work is expected.

Traffic won't be seriously affected until crews begin surface work in May. When June rolls around you can expect single lane closures up to two miles in length. In these situations, pilot cars will guide traffic through the construction area. Motorists are asked to expect delays up to 15-minutes.

For those who commute up and down the Mesa, please plan accordingly. When visiting the Mesa, please allow for a little extra time for construction zones and reduced speed limits.
