Casey Affleck Wins Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama at 2017 Golden Globes
Casey Affleck won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for his work in Manchester by the Sea at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night (January 8).
This is Affleck's first Golden Globe win. In his speech, the actor thanked director Kenneth Lonergan and his co-star Michelle Williams.
“I don’t have enough time to say what I want to say about Kenny, so suffice it to say, ‘I love you,'” he said. “‘You’re beautiful. You’re a treasure to all of us, to people who like movies and work in movies. And this is all because of you.'”
He also nodded to actor Matt Damon, who won the Academy Award for Good Will Hunting alongside Casey's brother, Ben.
“To Matt Damon, for giving me the opportunity, your support, your friendship,” Affleck said. “I suspect you won’t be passing on any more movies in the future when I might be anywhere nearby, but I’ll take this one.”
The other nominees in this category included Joel Edgerton for Loving, Andrew Garfield for Hacksaw Ridge, Viggo Mortensen for Captain Fantastic and Denzel Washington for Fences.
Hosted by Jimmy Fallon, the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony took place at the Beverly Hilton hotel on Sunday, January 8, broadcast live on NBC. The 2017 Golden Globes nominees were announced on December 12, with actress Meryl Streep selected as the honoree of the year’s Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award.
