A couple from Durango were driving to Silverton on Sunday when a big piece of ice broke off the mountainside and crushed their car.

Bradley and Mary Hardin were headed south on Highway 550 near mile marker 90 when the ice and rock debris fell from the rock face and crashed onto their car, totaling it.

For those not familiar with the area, that section of the highway is very narrow with a large rock wall on one side and a steep dropoff on the other. So when the ice and rocks started coming down, the Hardins had nowhere to escape.

Neither Bradley or Mary Hardin were seriously injured, although Bradley did have an injury to his hand, they were not injured and were taken home by police while their vehicle was being towed from the road.

The Colorado Department of Transportation routinely does ice mitigation in the area.
