The Love Mesa fire burning in a remote area northwest of Montrose is requiring additional firefighters to help get the fire contained.

The fire, in the Ouray Ranger District of the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forest, was first reported Monday (June 4) afternoon around 1:20 p.m. The first firefighters were able to reach the remote area within a few hours and determined the blaze covered about 20 acres of dry pinyon and juniper.

Air tankers and helicopters were brought in to assist the crew on the ground but they were unable to contain the fire. Two hotshot crews were sent in today (June 5) to help with containment.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the Forest Service says the fire is not fully contained and they have no estimate of when full containment will be made. Also, the cause of the Love Fire has not been determined.
