An ‘Ace Ventura’ Reboot Is In the Works, Along With ‘Young Guns,’ ‘Major League,’ ‘Dead Ringers’
When you think of Ace Ventura, the obnoxious faux-hawked goofball in a Hawaiian shirt and striped pants, you think of Jim Carrey. Could anyone else come close to embodying that lunacy? Probably not, but in our current Hollywood, where no nostalgic item goes un revived, the film’s studio is looking to give it a shot with a new life.
Morgan Creek Productions is undergoing a rebrand, changing its name to Morgan Creek Entertainment Group with plans to revamp some of its best-known titles. You know the production company – it’s the logo animation, with a river in the shape of a backwards ‘S’ and blaring horns. Deadline‘s got the exclusive that the company is aiming to reboot some of titles from the ‘80s and ‘90s as films and potential TV series, a rebrand they technically started last year with The Exorcist TV series.
A revamp of the Ace Ventura franchise is in the works, which the studio stresses would be less of a complete remake and more so a new movie that has the spirit of the original Carrey films. Morgan Creek president David Robinson said the wacky pet detective could return for either movie or TV format. “Because it’s episodic in nature, about a pet detective,” Robinson said, “it also lends itself to a traditional single-camera series franchise.”
That’s not all though; Morgan Creek is also eyeing 1988’s Western Young Guns for a movie reboot that will also aim to introduce an up-and-coming cast as the original did, starring Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Dermot Mulroney. Other reboots in talks include a TV remake of David Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers, a reimagining of 1989’s Major League, Clive Barker’s Nightbreed, American remake Diabolique, and John Schlesinger Pacific Heights. Those could all be interesting, but I’m more curious what a new Ace Ventura could look like.
