Anyone living in Western Colorado knows how popular JUCO is, but sometimes we get so excited about the event that we forget to prepare for it. Going to a JUCO game means spending several hours in the sun, isolated from your vehicle, surrounded by hundreds of people you don’t know. It’s always best to be prepared for anything you might need during the event, here are some helpful things to make sure you’re prepared.

1. Charge Your Phone

This one seems simple, but there is nothing more frustrating than running out of cell phone juice half way into the game. Charge your phone, full, before you get to the game. You could also pick up a portable recharging battery, so that if your phone does die you can fully recharge it without leaving your seat.

2. Less Clothing Is Better

I know it sounds like I’m just trying to get you naked, but the summers in Grand Junction can be brutal. The less clothing you’re wearing during the game, the cooler you will be.

3. Sunscreen, Obviously

Ok, if this one hasn’t hit home yet, than I’m going to smack you a few times and then say it again, bring sunscreen, and a lot of it. I’m going to take a wild guess that you understand the kind of permanent damage the sun can do to your skin. Bring some sunscreen, put it on, and bring some more, and put on some more.

4. Hydrate

I’m not saying you haven’t heard this one a million times, I’m saying that you’re going to hear it a million and one. Don’t underestimate how much water you’ll need to consume in the Grand Junction summer heat. Drink 1 gallon of water 6 hours before the game, and you’ll be off to a good start. Either bring water with you, or make sure you buy some while you’re at the game.

5. Research The Rules

If you know ahead of time what you can and cannot bring into the stadium, than you know what you can and cannot bring into the stadium (I know, it would seem like a simple concept, right?). I believe that any preparations that can be made toward anything, should be. I’m the kind of guy that if the stadium allows toiletries, I’ve already purchased travel size toiletries and they are currently in my backpack, because you never know. So, find out what you are allowed to bring, and prepare you pack for the day/night with anything you think you might need.

6. Locate Security

You never know when you’ll need help from security. No matter what event I am attending, I am always mindful of where the exits are, and where security personnel are. The reason is that if you know ahead of time, if something were to happen, you will instinctually head that direction, rather than trying to locate them in the panic.

These are only a few helpful tips, there is a lot more you could do to prepare for JUCO, or any outdoor sporting event. The key in all of this is plan, think, pack, prepare. Good luck, and enjoy the games!
