5 Cool Things to Do In Aspen That Don’t Involve Skiing
Aspen is an awesome western Colorado destination, even if you aren't going there to ski.
When you hear Aspen you immediately think snow, Snowmass Village, and skiing. But what about those of us who don't ski? Is there something there for us? The answer is 'yes!' Thanks to Trip Advisor, I came up with five of the top things to do in Aspen that don't involve skiing.
Anyone who is a huge John Denver fan like me should visit the John Denver Sanctuary. The Sanctuary came to be following Denver's sudden death in 1998. You'll find 4.5 acres of boulders, groves of native trees, wildflowers, streams, waterfalls, and wetlands. It pretty much captures the heart of John Denver, which was so eloquently expressed through his music.
How does this sound - staying in a cabin with flyfishing and horseback riding available during the summer months? Nearby are numerous hiking, biking, and photography opportunities. In the wintertime, they offer snowmobile tours through the forest. This would be a great family adventure or a nice couple's getaway.
Take in a show at the historic opera house, constructed in 1888. The concert, comedy shows, films, and lectures are presented throughout the year. Special events include the Aspen Mountain Film Festival, Laugh Festival, and the special Holiday Series of shows including music, film, magic, and theatre.
If you are a Colorado history buff, a visit to the Ashcroft Ghost Town is right up your alley. Located about 11 miles from Aspen is this silver mining ghost town featuring the restored remains of several historic buildings. Admission is $5, and open 9-5 during the summer. During the winter months and 'closed' hours you can take a self-guided tour on the honor system.
An award-winning theatre company, Theatre Aspen Hurst Theatre has an impressive list of productions - most recently Guys and Dolls, Little Shop of Horrors, God of Carnage, and The Wizard of Oz.
