It is warming up, and that means road crews are starting work. If you are planning a trip over the Red Mountain Pass, prepare for delays.

Beginning on April 13th, travelers who are planning to head up Red Mountain Pass will see around the clock construction, which will cause delays 24 hours a day.

Colorado Department of Transportation will be working on the culverts in the area, as well as crib walls that have been installed. Red Mountain Pass has been known for not having guardrails and having a very narrow passageway, and also for rock slides along the road.

With these issues plaguing the area  CDOT will begin work on the pass from April 15 to Aug. 31. This work will require one-way traffic alternating lane closures 24 hours a day, seven days a week with wait times varying between an estimated five to 20 minutes according to CDOT.

Scheduled blasting operations will require road shutdowns in each direction for more than 30 minutes. So if you are planning to travel over the pass, be sure to schedule extra time as the crews continue to work and make the pass a safer place to travel, though.
