The Mesa County District Attorney's Office has filed multiple charges against the man who admitted starting the Skipper Island fire in April.

Charges against 60-year-old Michael Mewborn include one count each of Firing Woodlands or Prairie and Damage to Division of Wildlife property.

Mewborn is also facing three counts of Improper Use of Division of Wildlife Property. All five charges are misdemeanors.

Mewborn immediately admitted to starting the fire and was the person who called 911 and met firefighters at the scene of the blaze. He has also indicated he would like to stay in the area to help with restoration efforts.

Skipper Island is part of the Horsethief Canyon State Wildlife area. The burned part of the area will remain closed until cleanup and restoration is complete.
