As national corporations continue to downsize, Grand Junction may have one less Payless ShoeSource to shop at.

The Payless store in Mesa Mall is one of over 800 stores across the US, including seven in Colorado, that could close.

The announcement follows the company's Chapter 11 Bankruptcy filing in April. At that time, Payless planned on closing 400 stores nationwide.

Payless is now wanting to add an additional 408 stores to that list, including the Grand Junction Mesa Mall location, more than doubling the original planned closures.

Company executives have been working to negotiate lower rent and other concessions hoping to keep some of those stores open. Several of the negotiations failed.

Store officials also cite poor sales, physical location, and other 'specific circumstances' as additional problems that are preventing some Payless stores from being profitable.

Payless will have another hearing on June 8 where the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Missouri will rule on the request for additional closings.

The Mesa Mall Payless ShoeSource is one of two stores in Grand Junction. The other location at 2883 North Avenue is not a store the company currently has listed for closure.
