Disney Reportedly Unsatisfied With Tone of ‘Rogue One,’ Orders Re-shoots

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney felt the force was too strong with the upcoming Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One, and has reportedly ordered for re-shoots to take place this summer.

The site reports that upon viewing an initial cut of the highly-anticipated sci-fi film, Disney execs felt that it “was tonally off with what a ‘classic’ Star Wars movie should feel like,” seeming more like a “war movie” — though, we can’t help but point out that “war” is literally in the title of the series, and the franchise is about an ongoing intergalactic political/military conflict… but hey, semantics!

Now, sources claim that the cast is scheduled to “regroup” mid-June for additional shooting, with the goal to “lighten the mood, bring some levity into the story and restore a sense of fun to the adventure” — recreating an atmospheric sense of wonder that is, truly, part of what made the original series so beloved in the first place. (After all, what is a Jurassic Park or Indiana Jones film without a little whimsy?)

And while newly-cast Han Solo actor Alden Ehrenreich was not involved in principal photography for the movie, some believe that the re-shoots may provide an opportunity to introduce audiences to the actor as the infamous space smuggler prior to his own spin-off. It’s unclear on how such a cameo would fit into the in-universe timeline of the franchise.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which recounts the mission of a group of rebels sent to steal the plans for the Death Star, will reportedly take place immediately before Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope. The film is due out December 16, 2016.
