Beginning tomorrow, July 10th, Crested Butte will be requiring pedestrians to wear face masks on Elk Avenue to combat the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19.)

The idea was brought to the Crested Butte city council earlier this week and was passed unanimously with a 7-0 vote.

While Colorado has slowly been opening back up, we've seen a rise in cases recently across the nation, and because of this, the town of Crested Butte is taking precautions in an attempt to keep its residents and tourists safe from another spike.

Elk Avenue is a very busy street in the heart of Crested Butte, and because of this, it's difficult to properly social distance and maintain a six-foot separation from other people. However, the new mandate will only apply to pedestrians, as people in cars or riding their bikes will be exempt from the new mask rule.

While Mesa County has seen very few cases of the Coronavirus when compared to other counties in the state, Gunnison County was hit especially hard. In fact, there was a period of time where people were not allowed to enter or leave the county because of the high number of cases.

In addition, Crested Butte is a popular tourist destination, with its skiing and snowboarding in the winter, and picturesque ski town vibe and moderate weather in the summertime.

The mandate will apply to the section of Elk Avenue between First and Sixth Street, with a section of Third Street that intersects Elk as well.

The new mask rule will be in effect from tomorrow, July 7th until September 30th.
