More than 11,000 cars were stolen in Colorado in 2013, and as we wrap up National Auto Theft Prevention month we take a look at the top ten stolen vehicles in Colorado last year.

According to figures released by lockdownyourcar.org, a motor vehicle is stolen in the United States every 44 seconds, and nearly half of stolen cars have the keys in them. Are you kidding me??

I have to confess, I was a stolen car victim -and, yes, the keys were in the ignition. The car was wrecked with nearly $3,000 in damage, plus I had to pay an attorney $500 to fight charges of giving false information to the police, reckless and imprudent driving, and leaving the scene of an accident.(In a face-to-face encounter, the neighborhood watch guy, a supposed eye witness (at 2am) pointed to me and falsely accused me of being the driver of the car.)

I was a young, foolish college student and learned an expensive lesson. I haven't left the keys in the ignition since then, and I ALWAYS lock my car, no matter what. I mean NO MATTER what!

Don't let that happen to you --and if your car is on the list of most frequently stolen vehicles, you probably should exercise even great precaution. Take your keys with you - and ALWAYS lock your car!
