Looking for a Colorado winter getaway? Have you done any snowshoeing lately? Here are five reasons you should visit Grand Lake before spring rolls around.

Did you know Grand Lake features cross country ski and snowshoe programs? I didn't. Sounds like fun.

Ranger-guided cross country ski and snowshoe groups meet on the west side of the park on Saturdays. Ski programs are at 10 a.m. and snowshoe programs are at 1:30 p.m. Classes are limited to 20 participants.

Do you need reservations? Yes. You can reserve space by calling (970) 586-1513 Wednesday through Sunday. You'll also need your own snowshoes and/or skis.

Is there a cost? No. There is no charge for the programs. You will, however, need to have a parks pass.

Why would you want to participate? Well, right off the top of my head, here are five reasons:

  • You can learn techniques to traverse various Colorado terrains
  • You will be accompanied by an experienced park ranger
  • You don't need previous experience
  • It's open to ages as young as 8-years-old and up
  • This is a chance to pick up a few skills when it comes to surviving in the wilderness

The East Side Snowshoe Walk programs start on Friday, February 1, 2019. The West Side Snowshoe and Cross Country Ski programs start Saturday, February 2, 2019.

Okay, so that's not a lot of advance notice. Still, these fun adventures are right here in Colorado. The drive from Grand Junction to Rocky Mountain National Park comes in at 282 miles, and just shy of five hours travel time. That's not bad for a weekend getaway. Give it some thought.
