It really makes sense that a city called Golden would celebrate Golden Retriever Day.

More than 1,000 Golden Retrievers were on hand for the special day on February 4. I wish I could have been there. I love Golden Retrievers.

Dog owners of any breed tend to take a lot of pride in their particular brand of dog. There's something special about coming together with other dog owners sharing a common bond. It's kind of like people who own Harley's - sort of a brotherhood.

Not only are Golden Retrievers beautiful dogs, but they are also one of the most loving dog breeds out there. They are so affectionate, gentle, content, patient, and sometimes timid.

I suppose I should also mention they can be a little on the demanding side. Often times they just want to be touched,  loved on, and paid attention to, and you can't really blame them for that. They give a lot of love and don't ask for that much in return.

Owning a Golden Retriever was once on my bucket list. I just had to have one. When it finally happened, it must have been a gift from above because when the opportunity came along, we just happened to have an extra $400. I couldn't imagine spending that much money on a dog, but if you have ever seen a Golden puppy, you will understand why we couldn't say no.

My one regret is that Shelby was only with us for 9 years. Wow, that time sure went by fast. I guess you always think maybe you could have given a little more love, provided a little better care, and taken a few more walks in the park.

I seriously doubt that I'll ever own another Golden Retriever. Shelby will be my one and only. But, every time I see a Golden, it brings back such fond memories and makes me smile. I will always take joy in the happiness I see in others who are enjoying their Golden Retrievers. Golden Retriever Day will always be a special day.
